After School

Not long ago a friend of mine told me he had seen a good K-Pop group’s video being played between the matches at a StarCraft tournament. He asked me if I had heard of Orange Caramel, which I had :) . I’ve liked them since I first heard them (I like their cute concept), but I haven’t really been listening to them much. My buddy’s interest prompted me to put their new full-length album Lipstick on my iPhone and I’ve been listening to them quite a bit the past week.

The album is good. It contains all but one b-side of their previously released material (I think). My favourite song is probably Shanghai Romance, but their new title track Lipstick is also catchy. It doesn’t have the J-Pop sound that their previous singles have had. It sounds more, for lack of a better term, international.

I actually held one of their CDs in my hand when I was in Seoul last year, but there were so many things I wanted to buy, so I didn’t buy it then.

After finishing Secret Garden, I started watching Dream High 2. It takes place in the same art school as the first Dream High, but a lot has changed. The school has lost its status and is going down the drain when an entertainment company buys it out and sends its own artists, who have been banned from performing for violating a new law prohibiting under-age artists from performing late at night, to attend the school for the time being. It’s not entirely clear what the exact reasoning behind this is.

The actors are all different with the exception of JYP and a few cameo appearances by the original cast.

The main character is Hae-seong, played by Kang So-ra. I recognize her from the movie Sunny. She’s really cute and funny. … Continue reading

Magic Girl was Orange Caramel’s first song as a sub-unit. I like Orange Caramel. I should listen to them more. But their songs (I’ve actually only heard this one and Shanghai Romance so far) sound more Japanese than Korean to me.

Orange Caramel, a sub-unit of After School, recently returned with the song Shanghai Romance. To me the song has more of a J-Pop feel to it, with it’s somewhat familiar sounding melody. I can’t really place it though. Pretty catchy!

I actually already posted this song (6:10-6:44 in this video  ). I admit that the video quality wasn’t the best, so here’s the Japanese version:

This is the “Japan Debut Special Edit”, which has a long drum intro. I like the medolic part, although it’s very short.
